On to Katherine

Packed up from Warloch rest area, and headed off for Katherine.  Should be a short day today.
It’s getting really warm as we go north.  Packed a few of the sleeping bags away this morning as I don’t think we’ll use them again until maybe below Perth.
It was only a short way to Mataranka, where we stopped for fuel.  This is the home town of the book “We of the Never Never”, which I’ve never ever read!  Thought about doing so today, though….  All the houses are behind iron fences, and signs around the place proclaim parking is at owner’s own risk.  Very safe town, obviously.
A few hours later we were in Katherine, which is a very big town compared to all we’ve passed through recently.  Still a lot of aboriginals just sitting around in the streets, and some weird country music piped through speakers all down the main street.  Not sure whether that was a calming initiative.  They should probably try different music!
Woolworths was like putting on a familiar shirt.  I’m not very brave – I’d much prefer the familiar to the unknown.  Nadine says she wants to be an explorer when she grows up – she’ll have to first conquer her fear of unknown toilets!
The checkout charged us 15 cents per plastic bag, something I'm sure is coming to Brisbane soon, and the trolleys all needed a $2 deposit.  Brisbane is SO behind the times! :) So we stocked up on fresh goodies and headed off to Katherine Gorge.
We are staying at the Nitmiluk National Park (that's the traditional name for Katherine Gorge) and it’s the best park I’ve stayed in!  There’s a resort pool in the centre, and bistro food served in the evenings.  It’s not very busy, because we’ve come during the dry season, but that suits us fine. It’s incredibly warm, and set to get warmer during the week.  The sun doesn’t go down until after 7pm, and the washing dries in half an hour.  I’m as snug as a bug in a rug.
Tomorrow we’re going on a tour of two of the Gorges by boat.  Very exciting.

  1. We went by boat on the gorge too. Not that long ago. So exciting to be able to picture where you are. So good to hear the news so quickly.

  2. I have a copy of the book "We of the Never Never" that you can read when you come home. Did you see the iron bedstead Mrs Aenus Gunn slept on for a year - with no mattress! Just the wire! Would have had good ventilation.
